Rolled Leather Collars and Leashes

When I first saw a rolled leather dog collar at the pet store, I thought “wtf is that for? It looks like it would hurtblue rolled snake print leather the dog.” I have a couple of grey hounds with thin coats, so of course I imagined these collars on my greyhounds.
After I opened my mind a little, I realized this would be fine on a very well behaved dog that didn’t pull on the leash, and a rolled leather collar would be a good looking fashion statement.
When I got home though, I hopped on Googley and did a little research. Turns out rolled leather dog collars are really meant for dogs with really thick coats of fur. A standard 3/4 or 1 inch flat collar folds the fur down and over. This can look a little goofy on a canine with a thick, long coat. With a rolled leather collar on the other hand, collar slips down into the coat and the fur goes around the collar, leaving only a minimal amount to sit underneath the collar. This also allows the dog to feel the collar better.

brown rolled leather leadFrom what I can gather, rolled leather collars may have originated in England. The only reason I think this is that the word England is often included with the phrase rolled collar. Though the logical side of my brain says, “since the word English is usually describing the leather, this is probably just a marketing buzz word, similar to “chipotle”, or other tastey words marketers use to describe otherwise tasteless food products. All of the English leather collars and leashes I see have brass hardware. I guess brass is another English trait. I personally don’t like brass or gold hot pink rolled leather leashhardware anything. But I do like English people, just for the record.

Another thing I’ve noticed about rolled leather dog collars and leashes is the variety of leather they are made of. Now I’m from Texas, home of cows and beef and good ole bull and steer leather. This is the most common type of leather used in leather dog collars and leashes. A lot of them you see for sale online brag about English leather. I don’t know what the difference is between an English and a Texas cow, but maybe the English cow has funny teeth and the Texas cow is bigger.
They are also offered online in some other fancy leather variations. Tanned Indian leather. What is tanned Indian leather??? Is this American Indian or India the country? I couldn’t find out. Is this from a cow, or is it the skin of Indians themselves? I assume it’s a cow, 8 rolled leather collarbut you never know.

Another popular leather variety for rolled leather collars and leashes is Latigo leather. From what I can gather, Latigo is the part of a horse saddle that goes underneath the horse. What makes these pieces of leather different is that they are impregnated with oils and waxes to resist moisture. Sounds like another marketing buzz word to me.
And my favorite leather variant is the rolled kangaroo leather dog collar and leash. Why is this my favorite? Simply red rolled leather collarbecause I love Australia, no other reason. I have also seen braided rolled kangaroo leather collars and leashes which look pretty cool.

So if you have a dog with a really thick coat, or you have a well mannered dog and want to make a fashion statement, you may want to look into a rolled leather collar and leash or lead.

Thanks for giving us the information on where dog leather collars and leashes were made. I do like rolled leather leashes as they are stronger, you get more control over your dog and they don’t break easily. The leather leash is also comfortable for the dog

We have a lovely dalmation that is a joy to own. A well marked dalmation is a very attractive dog – and will bring lots of admiring comments. It seems that most people are fond of dalmations – thanks to Disney.

But if you choose the wrong type of leash and collar – for example a choke chain then the reaction is amazingly different.

A nice clean leather collar and leash not only looks attractive, but gives the impression that your dog is well cared for – and most people will assume the dog has earned your affection – and they will react accordingly.

Alpha 1 makes a handcrafted rounded collar that is solid leather. It a nice alternative to flat rolled and stiched. It is made from the heart of the hide and has a great feel and quality that is much smoother than the rolled. They come in choke collars and martingales. http://www.a1leash.com/Collars.html

  • Great One! because the logical side of my brain says, “since the word English is usually describing the leather, this is probably just a marketing buzz word, similar to “chipotle”, or other tastey words marketers use to describe otherwise tasteless food products.

  • My lovable pet Tommy is a thick furred dog and he loves to walk with me often in the evening. He is white and he loves dark clothes and fresh meat. We fondle him a lot and in recent my father bought him a lovely rolled leather collar and leashes to gift him on his first birthday. Tommy became a fashionable icon after wearing this Latigo collar around his neck. The rolled leather collar comforts him with safety and security and it is durable too. And even kangaroo leather, good ole bull and steer leather, tanned Indian leathers are available. Tie this around your pretty dogs and make your pets a fashionable icon. Thank You!
