Retractable Dog Leashes
Howdy fellow dog owners, LeatherDogLeashGuy here again..
Today I talk a little about those retractable dog leashes. You know the ones, most I have seen have a red plastic base with a leash coiled up inside. They allow your canine to wander away from your side further than a typical 6 foot leash. You control the length of
the leash with the push of a button with your thumb.
This sounds cool at first, but after thinking about it, I just don’t really see the point.
I normally see small dogs on these leashes. Which is good because most of these devices don’t look bulky enough to handle the weight of a full size dog. The nylon leash used is small compared to most typical 1 inch nylon leashes being only
1/2 inch in the model I looked at. This would make me nervous using it with one of my greyhounds.
Maybe I have been watching too much “Dog Whisperer”, but idea of a leash that allows your dog to wanter off sounds counter productive
to me. In my opinion, a leash is a tool used to control your dog while it learns to obey via vocal command. My goal with my dogs is for them to be under my control at all times, with or without a leash. When going for walks and jogs, my dogs know to stay by my side, wether they see another dog, or a squirrel, or if they are scared. At the dog park, they know they are free to run and stretch their legs, but when I whistle, it is their cue to come to my side. This couldn’t have been accomplished without a leash.
So in my opinion, whatever value that holds, these retractable leashes are a waste of money.
They serve no real purpose and they are more prone to break. For this guy, I’ll stick with a good ole leather dog leash.
